Often settled in the west

Issued: 0530hrs Friday 22nd December 2017
Duty forecaster: Matthew Hugo

Cold and wintry across northern and north-eastern areas of Europe, milder elsewhere but often settled especially in the west.

Friday
On Friday and high pressure will dominate across much of France and Iberia with plenty of fine weather, despite some patchy light rain and drizzle in places, it will be mild overall across much of western areas of Europe. More unsettled conditions are expected through the Med though, especially near Italy and eastwards towards Greece with heavy rain, showers and perhaps thunderstorms too. Colder, more seasonal weather is expected across Scandinavia and into some eastern areas of Europe, with wintry precipitation possible in Sweden, Finland and down toward Poland, for example.

Saturday
Into Saturday and a large area of high pressure will continue to maintain fine and settled conditions across much of France and Iberia, essentially most of western areas of Europe with fine weather, perhaps some chilly nights, but otherwise mild. Very unsettled weather will develop across northern areas of Europe as wet and windy weather moves into Scandinavia, with perhaps some significant snowfall across more central and northern areas of Norway, Sweden and Finland, for example. Unsettled conditions will also continue across more eastern areas of Europe and down towards the eastern regions of the Med with rain and showers in Greece and surrounding countries continuing.
