Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Thunderstorms increasingly widespread by Sunday

Saturday
A slack pressure regime continues across Europe, bringing heat to southern areas, whilst northern areas are fresher. Southern Spain and Portugal will be dry, sunny and hot, highs 30 to 35C. Northern Iberia sees thunderstorms, these spreading across the Pyrenees into south-west France. Hot across southern France at 33 to 38C, nearer 25 to 28C in the north. A few thundery showers for the Alps. Hot and dry for Italy, the Mediterranean and Greece. Hot with isolated showers for the Balkans and Romania, topping 30C. Breezy but largely dry in Denmark and the Low Countries. A few showers for eastern Germany. A front brings rain to northern Poland, western Ukraine and southern Scandinavia. Some prolonged heavy falls possible for central Norway. Northern Sweden and Finland stays dry with sunshine, highs 17 or 20C.

Sunday
Staying hot and dry across southern Europe, into the mid or high 30s Celsius for southern Spain & Portugal, Italy, the Balkans, Greece and areas toward the Black Sea. Scattered bursts of rain for northern Iberia, whilst thunderstorms are expected to break out widely across France, resulting in torrential downpours and a risk of flash flooding. Storms will also affect the Alps, particularly western areas, although some rain is likely to spread to Austria and southern Germany too. Northern Germany and the Netherlands should escape dry until later, but then storms may develop into the night. Isolated showers for the Balkans and Carpathians, but much of eastern Europe stays dry. Fair weather for southern Scandinavia, whilst areas of rain affect central Sweden, plus the north & west of Norway.
